Some Tips to Keep Your Pallet Racking Safe

Some Tips to Keep Your Pallet Racking Safe

Pallet Racking is like a car. Why do I make such a very unusual comparison? Because it is safe and reliable when used correctly, or it will be dangerous. Please see the followings:

You need to ensure when using your racking you understand its limits and understand what needs to be done to keep it safe.

The first tip is, pay attention to the “Load Capacity”. This is important before you load onto the racking system. Your rack is designed to support a specific load in a specific way so storing something different may affect the safety of the load. For example, your racking system to store a pallet full of cardboard boxes, it may not be able to store a pallet full of crate of drinks in the same place, as the latter is more heavier. The racking system is designed for your need and you should make sure to use it correctly.

The second tip is to understand that weight is not just weight. Although you have the specs of your rack, you still need to know that how the capacities are calculated! Let’s take an example, your racking is designed to hold things of weight 1000kg. It is not suggested to put light things on the bottom which may calculate to 100kg and then heavier things top which would calculate to 900kg. As a result to make the top much heavier than the bottom, it may increase the risk of the racking falling. Remember this, 100% understand the capacities of what can be stored.

The next tip to keep in mind is…NO SMACKING THE RACK! Why? Because pallet racking can be dangerous when hitting them! This can be easily be avoided if use post protectors on the uprights in the aisle facing columns and anti-collision fence to protect the frame of racking so as to deflect the impact from forklifts etc.

Another thing to remember is that the space between the aisles must be suitable for the machinery used! Our advice is to leave enough space to make the loading job easier and also to reduce risk.

The last but not least is making sure that you load it right! Please leave enough of space to avoid overly tight. For if things are too tight can easily causes collisions. What’s worse, it can also be a fire risk and cause rack damage.
